“Is beag an tionchar a bheith aici, stair an dhá chontae, ar an thoradh Dé Domhnaigh”

Súil chun cinn ar an gcomórtas FBD seachtar an taobh agus cluiche cheannais na hÉireann. Deireadh seachtaine speisialta in ár gcultúr.

An deireadh seachtaine seo tiocfaidh na sluaithe móra go dtí príomhchathair na tíre le haghaidh chuspóra amháin, ár gcluichí dúchasacha. Ar an Satharn beidh siad tagtha ó chian agus ó chóngar chun páirt a ghlacadh sa chomórtas cailiúil, an FBD All-Ireland 7’s agus an lá dár gcionn imreofar cluiche cheannais na hÉireann i gCeannáras an Chumainn Lúthchleas Gael.

Ar dtús ba mhaith liom ádh mór a ghabháil le gach foireann ag iomaíocht, comhghairdeas a ghabháil do na buaiteoirí agus mo bhuíochas a thaispeáint do na céadta is míle duine atá freagrach as an staid slaintiúil in a bhfuil ár n-eagraíocht náisiúnta faoi láthair. Is iad siúd na daoine ag ní na ngeansaithe, ag ullmhú na gceapairí, ag marcaíl na bpáirceanna ag díol na gclár agus na ticéid agus araile. Cuireadh tús leis an gcomórtas seachtar an taobh dhá bhliain is dhá scór ó shin agus tá súil agam go mbeidh na daichead bliain atá romhainn chomh rathúil.

D’fhéadfaí a rá gan aon amhras go bhfuil ár gcultúr, teanga, dearcadh agus cluichí fite fuaite. Ní lia tír ná nós agus i mo thuairim féin feictear dea-thréithe na ndaoine ón oileán seo i ngach acmhainn ceangailte leis an gCLG. Cur i gcás an cluiche cheannais iomanaíochta cúpla seachtain ó shin. Chonacthas lucht féachána na gCait, Luimneach agus Tiobráid Árann ag spreagadh a bhfoireann le chéile agus ag baint taitneamh as an gcluiche ag an am céanna.

I gcomhthéacs an scéil seo, i mbliana go háraithe, tá sé thar a bheith cuí go bhfuil dhá fhoireann ón nGaeltacht, Ciarraí agus Dún na nGall, ag casadh le chéile sa chluiche is suntasaí. Tiocfaidh na daoine dúchasacha siúd ó na háiteanna iarghúlta agus nach iontach a chloisteáil, na canúintí difriúla a chuireadh i bhfeidhm thart Páirc an Chrócaigh? Glacann ár dteanga páirt lárnach in ár n-oidhreacht.

Ina dteannta sin, d’fhreastail mé ar an gcomórtas peile na Gaeltachta i Maigh Cuilinn i mbliana agus bhí sé de phribléid dom a bheith i láthair. Bhí atmaisféar breá gealgháireach ann, peil den chéad scoth agus na daoine difriúla ag meascadh le chéile. Ba chóir dúinn an-bhéim a chur ar na comórtais cosúil leis sin agus an cheann i gCill Mochuda i mo thuairim.

An mórcheist, an mbeidh an corn Sam Mhic Uidhir ag taisteal Thuaidh nó Theas chun cóiríocht a fháil le haghaidh an gheimhridh? Ar son traidisiúin, is cuma liom faoi a n-éachtaí thar na bearta. Is beag an tionchar a bheith aici, stair an dhá chontae, ar an thoradh Dé Domhnaigh. Tuairiscíodh dom ar son saineolaí amháin le deanaí, gur chríochnaigh suim na Conallaigh sa chomórtas céanna nuair a rinne siad scrios d’Áth Cliath cúpla seachtain ó shin! An féidir leat é sin a chreidiúint? Seafóideach amach is amach agus is dóigh liom go bhfuil seachtain go leith ar a laghad caite acu ag déanamh scagadh ar Chiarraí. Beidh siad ag diriú a n-aigne i dtreo amháin, an t-aon treo a bhfuil fhios acu.

Tá go leor cosúileachtaí idir an bheirt acu, an cheann is suntasaí is é is dóichí go mbeidh beirt fhathach fir ar imeall na cearnóige agus tabharfaidh sé sin léargas dúinn cén saghas chluiche a bheidh againn. Beidh an cogadh i lár na páirce fíor-shuimiúil agus an brú a chuirfear ar an liathróid ag dul isteach. Is fíor a rá nach mbeidh an fhairsing céanna ag na tosaithe is contuirtí agus go háraithe laoch na himirthe an lá deireanach, Ryan Mc Hugh, ar an Domhnach. Ar an dromchlá ceapaim go mbeidh cúpla athruithe againn ar an dá fhoireann agus tá súil agam go bhfeicfimid seanadoirí na bhfoireann Marc Ó Sé, Déaglan Ó Súilleabháin, Christy Toye agus b’fheidir fiú amháin an Gooch ón gcéad noiméad. Ba chóir dóibh a bheith ar an airdeall i gcoinne bhagairt an “counterattack” mar a déarfá mar tá an-chumas ag an mbeirt acu sa roinn seo.

Sin ráite táim den bharúil go mbreathnóidh an coimhlint ar píosa draíochta ó taobh amháin seachas na tactaicí, staitisticí agus buntáistí atá ina seilbh. Tá a n-áit sa chluiche cheannais tuillte go mór ag an mbeirt acu agus beidh sé beagnach indéanta iad a scarúint ón a chéile. Tá súil agam anois go mbuafaidh an fhoireann is fearr ar an lá is tabhachtaí. Mar is eol dúinn tá cúpla bhliain caite ag Jim MC Guinness i gCiarraí mar mhac léinn. Tá taithí agus ceachtanna an dá cheantair aige. D’ealraíonn sé dom nach féidir leis cailleadh! An dúbailte? Is é sin santach!

Time is a good storyteller………..usually

“The History of both these counties will have very little influence on Sunday’s result”

Look ahead to the FBD All Ireland 7’s and the All Ireland Final. A special weekend in our culture

This weekend huge crowds will converge on our capital city for one purpose, our native games. On Saturday they will have come from far and near to take part in the well-established competition, The FBD All-Ireland 7’s with the All-Ireland final to be played at GAA Headquarters the following day.

Firstly I would like to extend good luck to the competing teams, my congratulations to the winners and demonstrate my appreciation to the hundreds of thousands of people who are responsible for the healthy position currently enjoyed by our national organisation at present. Those are the people who wash the jerseys, prepare the sandwiches, mark out the pitches and sell the programmes and tickets. The 7’s competition was established 42 years ago and I sincerely hope that the next 40 will be equally successful.

It could be said without question that our culture, language, outlook and games are interwoven. Every country has its own customs and in my personal opinion, the good traits of this islands people are seen in every resource connected with the GAA. Take for example the All Ireland hurling final a few weeks ago. Supporters of the Cats, Limerick and Tipperary were seen encouraging their teams together and enjoying the game at the same time.

In the context of this story, this year in particular, it is extremely appropriate that two teams from the Gaeltacht , Kerry and Donegal, will meet together in the decider. The natives will come from the remote areas and wouldn’t it be great to hear the various dialects being put to use around Croke Park? Our language plays a central part in our heritage.

In addition to that, I attended the Comórtas peile na Gaeltachta in Moycullen this year and was privileged to be in attendance. There was a lovely cheerful atmosphere, football of the highest standard and the different people mixing together. I believe we should emphasise the importance of these competitions.

The big question is will Sam Maguire be travelling North or South to find accommodation for the winter? On the side of tradition, I really don’t care about their incomparable achievements. The history of both teams will have little to know influence on Sunday’s result. It was reported to me by one expert lately, that Donegal’s interest in the same competition finished when they destroyed Dublin a few weeks ago! Can you believe that? Out and out nonsense and I suppose they have spent at least a week and a half analysing Kerry. They will be focusing their minds in one direction, the only direction they know.

There are numerous comparisons to be made between both teams, most significantly is the likelihood that there will be two giants on the edge of the square and this will give us an insight into what kind of game we can expect. The battle in midfield and the pressure that will be put on the ball going in will be extremely interesting. It is true to say that the most dangerous forwards and in particular the man of the match the last day, Ryan Mc Hugh, will not have the same freedom on Sunday. On the surface I think that we will have a few changes on both teams and I expect that we will see the seasoned campaigners of both teams, Mark Ó Sé Declan Ó Sullivan, Christy Toye and maybe even the Gooch from the start. Both teams should be on their guard against the counterattack as you would say, as both teams have huge ability in this department.

That being said I am of the opinion that this conflict will be decided on a single piece of magic from one side or the other rather than tactics, statistics or the advantages they possess. Their places in this final are richly deserved and it will be almost impossible to separate them. My only hope now is that the best team wins on the most important day. As we know Jim Mc Guinness has spent a number of years in Kerry as a student and he has the experience and teachings of both districts on his side. It appears to me he can’t lose! The Double?? Now that’s just greedy!
