aidan-oshea-and-johnny-buckley-322013-390x285 Aodán Ó Sé agus Seán Ó Buachalla ag chur aithne ar a chéile sa tsraith i mbliana

Sa saol peile atá anois i réim, shamhlofá go mbeadh páirt a ghlacadh ag an gceithre fhoireann atá fagtha sa chraobh. Ciarraí, Maigh Eo, Áth Cliath agus Dún na nGall. Seachas siúd, b’fheidir go gcuirtear ionadh ar daoine go bhfuil Tír Eoghain agus b’fheidir Corcaigh as an áireamh. Mo thuairim phearsanta féin agus níl sé ach mo thuairim féin, ní raibh áit tuillte acu as an ndóigh a d’imir siad agus chaithfidís, na lucht leanúna is láidre a admháil freisin, nach raibh sé. Is ceart agus cóir go bhfuil na foirne is fearr sa tír go dtí seo, ar thóir Sam Mhic Uidhir fós ag deireadh mí Lúnasa agus sin mar a sheasann sé faoi láthair.

D’fhéidfeá a dhéanamh go leor comparáidí idir na foirne ó na cluichí ceathrú cheannais atá imeartha acu i mbliana. D’aimsigh Maigh Eo cúl amháin agus fiche cúilín an lá deireanach i gcoinne chúil amháin agus naoi gcúilín déag ar son Ciarraí. Bhí an méid géillte acu thart an méid céanna freisin, dhá chúl agus cúig chúilín déag i gcoinne dhá chúil agus deich gcúilín. Ag deireadh an chluiche bhí naoi nduine ar an leathanach scór ón dá fhoireann agus dealraíonn sé dom go bhfuil tósaithe fíor-contúirteach amuigh leo féin ag an mbeirt acu, Ó Donnchú agus Ó Conchubhair ar ndóigh. Creidimse go láidir freisin áfach go raibh an bheirt acu ag gluaiseacht in a ndara fearas an lá deireanach agus ba mhaith leo an scéal a chur i gceart agus taispeántas i bhfad níos fearr a thabhairt dúinn.

Anuas ar sin, tá an-mhuinín agus meas acu as a mbainisteoirí, Séamus Ó hÓráin agus Éamonn Fitzmaurice agus beidh sé suimiúil cén sórt straitéisí a gcuirfear i bhfeidhm ar an Domhnach chun buntáistí agus neart an fhreasúra a laghdú.

Le deanaí léigh mé cúpla alt ag breathnú chun cinn ar na cluichí iomanaíochta agus peile agus thugas rud amháin faoi deara ceapaim go bhfuil suntasach. Ba iad na Cait an t-aon fhoireann amuigh leo féin, nach raibh ag tarraingt aire leo féin ag miniú a n-aidhmeanna nó an fís atá acu. Dá mbeinn i mbróga Shéamais Ó Donnchú, agus is mór an truá nach mbím, choimeádfainn mo chuspóirí phearsanta féin i m’aigne. Cítear dom go raibh an iomarca bhéim le deanaí ar a chuardach gan staonadh, i ndiaidh bonn uile Éireann agus is fuath liom an meon go bhfuil boinn nó gradaim tuillte ag peileadóirí áirithe a thuilleadh ná a n-imreoirí chomhbhaill. Is annamh go gcloistear T.J. Reid nó Paul Murphy ag labhairt faoi a gcuspóirí atá acu sna meáin.

Ar an bhfoireann cóitséala contae Mhaigh Eo tá mo shean-chara, Donie Buckley, ag obair go dian dícheallach. As Ciarraí é agus beidh léargas uathúil aige faoi stíl agus straiteisí Chiarraí. Bhrisfeadh sé a chroí gan dabht, an buille marfach a thabhairt do a chontae dúchais ach is cuma leis an dílseacht sin ar an Domhnach agus beidh sé ag diriú a aigne ar an gcluiche seo.

Táim ag súil go mór leis na “match-ups” mar a déarfá. Ceapaim go bhfuil na tréithe is fearr ag Peter Crowley ag teacht isteach ón mbinse, chun smácht a choimeád ar Aodán Ó Sé, beirt fhathach. Beidh Keith Ó h-Uiginn nó Tom Cunniffe tofa chun bagairt Shéamais Ó Donnchú a scriosadh. Ní bheidh aon cheadúnas acu a bheith ag dul ar an ionsaí an t-am go léir agus beidh orthu an béim a chur ar a gcumas mar chosantoirí sa chluiche seo. B’fheidir go mbeidh sé dualgas Sheáin Mac Ionnrachtaigh tionchar Cillian Ó Conchubhair a laghdú? Dá n-éireodh le Mac Ionnrachtaigh  Ó Conchubhair a choimeád as an gcluiche beidh go leor deacrachtaí ag Maigh Eo agus bhreathnóidís ar na ciceanna saora an bua a aimsiú.

Mar a luaigh mé níos luaithe, níl an taispeántas iomlán feicthe againn ón dá fhoireann go dtí seo. Sílim nach mbeidh ach an t-íosmhéid eatarthu ar a cúig a chlog Dé Domhnaigh is cuma cé hiad na buaiteoirí. Táim den tuairim láidir go mbeidh cúil againn agus an fhoireann a fhaigheann an chuid is mó acu, beidh siad le feiceáil arís i mbliana. Sin ráite déarfaidh mé Maigh Eo. Taithí acu, ceithre chraobh i gCúige Chonnacht buaite acu as a chéile ach an rud is suntasaí is go mbeidh fís agus ceannasaíocht an tsaighdiúra Dhéaglán Ó Súilleabháin in easnamh i mo thuairim. Má bhuann Ciarraí an cluiche seo gan Ó Súilleabháin agus an Gooch, éacht dochreidte a bheidh sé.

The first of the All- Ireland semi- finals, Kerry V Mayo

With the current football life prevailing, you would imagine that the four remaining teams left in the championship would still have a part to play. Kerry, Mayo, Dublin and Donegal. Beyond those maybe it is a surprise to some people that Tyrone or Cork are out of the equation. My personal opinion and it is only my opinion is that they are undeserving of a place as a result of poor performances and even the most ardent of supporters could not but admit similarly. It is fair and proper that the best teams in the country up to this point are still in the quest for Sam Maguire at the end of August and that is how it presently stands.

You could make many comparisons between the teams from their respective quarter finals this year. Mayo managed 1-20 the last day in contrast to 1-19 on Kerry’s behalf. The amounts conceded were also very similar, 2-15 against 2-10. At the end of the game both teams could account for nine players on the score sheets and it appears to me that both teams have an extremely dangerous forward in their own standing, O’ Donoghue and O’ Connor obviously. I strongly believe that both teams were moving in their second gear the last day and both would like to rectify this with a much stronger performance.

On top of that, they both have huge confidence and respect for their managers, James Horan and Éamonn Fitzmaurice and it will be interesting what strategies are put in place on Sunday to limit the advantages and strengths of the opposition.

Recently I read a number of articles looking ahead to the important upcoming hurling and football games and noticed one thing I deemed significant. It was the Cats who were the only team who were not drawing attention to themselves by explaining their own personal aims and vision. If I was in James O’ Donoghue’s shoes and it’s a pity I’m not, I would keep my aspirations to myself. It appears to me that recently there has been too much emphasis on his relentless search for an All-Ireland medal and I hate the attitude that certain players are more deserving of medals or awards more than their fellow players. It is very rare indeed that T.J Reid or Paul Murphy are heard speaking about their personal aspirations with the media.

On the Mayo coaching team my old friend Donie Buckley is hard at work. A Kerry man who will have a unique insight into Kerry’s style and tactics. It would undoubtedly break his heart to give his own native county the killer blow but he won’t care about loyalties on Sunday and instead will be firmly focusing on this game.

I am looking forward to the “match-ups” as you’d say. I think Peter Crowley coming in from the bench, has all the traits to ensure Aidan O’ Shea is kept under control, two giants. Keith Higgins or Tom Cunniffe will be elected to eliminate the threat of James O’ Donoghue.  They will not have the license to be on the attack at all times and they will have to use their ability as defenders firstly in this game. Maybe it will be the duty of Shane Enright to reduce the impact of Cillian O’ Connor? If Enright succeeds in keeping O’Connor out of the game Mayo will have problems and they will depend on free kicks to win them the game.

As I said earlier we have not seen a complete performance from either team to date. I think there will only be the minimum between them come 5pm on Sunday regardless of who the winners are. I strongly believe we will have goals and the team who gets most will be seen again this year. That said I will say Mayo. Experience, four Connacht championships won in a row but the most significant factor will be the absent vision and leadership of the soldier Declan O’ Sullivan. If Kerry win this without O’ Sullivan and The Gooch, it will be an unbelievable achievement.
